Over-educated & Unemployed
Picture this: suit-wearing, laptop toting, post graduates in a mad dash to be those lucky candidates to get the privilege of working for minimum wage, flipping burgers. I know I’m preaching to the choir, when I talk about the economy and the high percentage of unemployment. Oh, yeah! Let’s not also forget, the billions of dollars of debt us Americans owe.
As we sit and ponder the fate of this ‘new’ America, I, like many post graduates who’s parents instilled in us, if you get good grades in school, it will get you in college and your reward is a high-paying job. (After all, it should be high paying, because your school debt will be staggering!)
Unfortunately, it seems that my accomplishments as well as my education has gotten me nowhere, but only to intimidate H.R.
None-the less, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I am proud of my accomplishments, as they include:
- I’ve traveled most of the world extensively over 8 times.
- Lived in Cape Town, South Africa for 6 years and worked with the likes of Nelson Mandela, Sir Bishop Tutu, and the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.
- Received a degree from Amsterdam, Netherlands as a Web Design Master
- Received a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts in Community and Media Technology
- Attended Harvard University for post-graduate studies in Anthropology.
In short, I am over-educated and unemployed. I know the worse is yet to come, before we see the promise-land. Meanwhile, I have not given up on looking for a job; The only difference is, when I fill out applications, I am reduced to saying that I merely obtained a GED. A white lie only to try and survive.
So, remember boys and girls… get good grades, go to college and put yourself in debt, so that you may be one of those lucky ones flipping burgers.
